More Settlements

More illegal Israeli settlements ...

I'm not sure I buy it as "illegal." I don't think anyone in their right mind is under the illusion that Israel would give up EAST Jerusalem in any peace deal. If anything I would see it as a way to strengthen their position with their constituency as they approach the possibility of giving up WEST Jerusalem. Am I way off there?

Answer me a question though: Why is it that the Government builds things there? Are there not private contractors which decide to build projects in neighborhoods that are already considered Israeli? Is it just a question of zoning approval or is everyone in Israel on Government subsidized housing? That's always confused me.

well there is a jpost article this week saying that jerusalem may be divided in a peace deal, so i will hold out hope.

israel controls the building permits, and they use this control to decide which parties build what. so many house demolitions made by the idf in the occupied territories cite building permits as the cause for demolition, but even when palestinians try and go through the proper channels, they get bloacked, so they build anyway.

ps jeff halper made some very nice comments on the issue of permits ; he is a co-founder of the group israelis against house demolition, or something like that.
